OUR PROGRAMMES

What we do

We run two programmes in Nepal, each targeting children at different stages of childhood and community needs.

PROGRAMME 01

Peace Education Nepal (PEN)

In 2022, Our Street Our Children proudly began a partnership with Peace Education Nepal (PEN) to extend our impact to one of the most marginalised communities in Nepal. PEN operates in Gamahariya, a rural village in the Parsa District, home to around 50 Dalit families.

Dalits, historically regarded as the lowest caste in Hindu society, continue to face systemic

discrimination, social exclusion, and limited access to basic rights and services. Children in this

community are especially vulnerable, many at high risk of child labour, early marriage, alcohol addiction, trafficking, abuse, and chronic malnutrition.

Through this partnership, over 60 children now receive daily care, protection, and vital support through PEN’s dedicated day care centres. These centres offer:

  • Educational classes and creative activities
  • A safe, nurturing environment
  • Practical skills training
  • Most critically, counselling and emotional support to help children cope with the ongoing discrimination and deprivation they face

The programme is delivered by two core team members:

  • A Social Worker/Counsellor who oversees care and emotional support
  • An Education Officer who ensures learning and skill-building remain at the heart of the project

The entire initiative is carefully managed and monitored by our on-the-ground Social Worker to ensure accountability and meaningful outcomes.

Expected Impact:

  • 80 children will have consistent access to care, education, and skills development in a safe, supportive setting.
  • At least 50% of children are expected to transition to high school
  • At least 50% will engage in ongoing education or skills training, creating new pathways for their future

This partnership is a vital step in breaking cycles of poverty and discrimination, offering dignity,

opportunity, and hope to children who need it most.

PROGRAMME 02

Homework Club

Our homework club is redefining what a classroom can be, even in the face of significant space limitations. Upon entering the learning space, it is immediately clear that this is no ordinary classroom. Despite its modest size, the dedication of our teachers and the determination of our students create an environment where learning truly flourishes.

Within this setting, students demonstrate remarkable focus and drive as they:

  • Expand their knowledge and understanding
  • Build essential academic and life skills
  • Form meaningful relationships with peers and mentors

The role of our teachers extends far beyond traditional education. They provide vital emotional support, individualised attention, and consistent academic guidance. The result is a safe, nurturing space that promotes both personal and educational development.

A core element of the tuition is English language instruction. As government schools teach in Nepali, English proficiency is essential for children to access further education opportunities, vocational training, and future employment, opportunities that might otherwise remain out of reach.

This impactful programme is made possible through the generosity of UK supporters, each of whom sponsors a student at a cost of just £6 per month (£72 per year). Currently, 30 students benefit from sponsorship. However, at the time of writing, we are seeking additional sponsors to ensure the continued success of this initiative.

Though our homework club may be small, its impact is substantial, empowering children to change the trajectory of their lives through education, support, and hope.

Help us keep doing this.

Our programmes run because people in the UK choose to give. A small regular gift goes further than you might think.
