Day Care Centre Project (DCC) for Dalit Community
1. DCC Gamahariya, Parsa
Gamahariya is a rural village in the Parsa District of Nepal. This village is around 12 km south west from Birgunj, which is the headquarter and main city of Parsa District. It is very close to the India-Bihar border. According to the census of this year 2021, there are around 7000 people living in this village. There are approximately 51 Dalit families leaving in the village in two separate areas, and approximately one hundredchildren are there from 0-18 years old with the family. In one area, there are 13 families, and in another area, there are 36 families. We are working with 64 children who range from age 4 to 16. These children are extremely vulnerable and at high risk of child labor, child marriage, alcohol addiction, trafficking, sexual abuse, and severe malnutrition. At the moment, we have two small community buildings in both areas, and these buildings are our work places and classrooms for our children.
In one community, there are 23 children who are joining the first DCC, and in another area, there are 41 children who are joining the second DCC. The children will have been provided with quality educational classes, extra activities, care and most importantly with counselling after the terrible event they have experienced. They will be linked back to the local school or training Centre.
2. Basis for project selection
In this rapidly changing world, there is very slow changes in this society because of traditional systems and cultures remain dominant due to a lack of education. People have a caste system and discrimination between casts. Dalit is group people belonging to the lowest stratum system in India and Nepal, previously characterised as untouchable. These are people who have very limited access to property and power. Their children lives are forced by the circumstances of their birth and poverty. Due to increasing urbanization, unemployment, and a lack of financial resources to meet the basic needs of the family, there are increasing quarrels in the family, and their direct impact is on the children. These children are deprived of basic services like food, education, and health. The project will directly work with them and it easy to assist the emergency needs of such children as soon as possible and provide them with much-needed services like psychosocial counselling, education, and can support health checks.
